Blog What Is Wellbeing

I think wellbeing is one of those words we all use without necessarily stopping to think about what it means. We talk about improving our wellbeing, looking after our mental health and finding a better balance – but what does that actually look like in everyday life?

For me, wellbeing is closely linked to the relationship between our body, mind and spirit. Modern life can put us under a lot of pressure, and when stress becomes a constant part of everyday life, it can affect how we feel physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

That doesn’t mean wellbeing is about being happy all the time or having a perfectly balanced life. Life doesn’t work like that. There will be times when we’re stressed, worried, overwhelmed or simply struggling to cope.

People often come to me when life has started to feel out of balance and they’re not quite sure what to do about it.

Wellbeing is about noticing those changes and understanding what your body, mind and spirit need to cope with the pressures of everyday life. For some people, that might mean changing a routine that isn’t working, finding ways to manage stress or making more time for rest. For others, having the space to talk things through through counselling can also be helpful.

Wellbeing is about more than your physical health

Our physical health is an important part of our wellbeing. Eating well, getting enough sleep, staying active and making time to rest and relax can all affect how we feel. However, our mental, emotional and spiritual health matter too, and these can have a real impact on how we feel physically.

Stress can also have a big impact on our wellbeing. Modern life can put us under a lot of pressure, and if that stress becomes a constant part of everyday life, it can affect our body, mind and spirit. You may notice that you’re tense, tired, struggling to switch off or finding it harder to cope with things that wouldn’t normally bother you.

You can be doing all the things you’re “supposed” to do and still feel stressed, lonely, overwhelmed or unable to switch off. You might have a busy social life but feel as though you never have any time to yourself, or spend so much time looking after other people that your own needs keep getting pushed aside.

Wellbeing looks different for everyone

Looking after your wellbeing isn’t about getting everything right. Life will always have difficult periods, and there will be days when we’re tired, worried or simply not ourselves.

What helps you feel well will depend on your circumstances, personality and what is happening in your life at the time. For one person, getting outside for a walk might help clear their head. Someone else might need more time with friends, more time alone or simply fewer demands on their time.

What you need can change too. Something that helped you feel balanced a year ago may not be what you need now.

So rather than asking yourself whether you’re doing enough for your wellbeing, try asking: how am I actually doing?

It’s a simple question, but it’s one we don’t always stop to ask.

Getting support for your wellbeing

If you’re finding it difficult to make changes on your own, talking to someone can be a useful place to start. You might recognise that you’re feeling overwhelmed, constantly tired or not quite yourself, but have no idea what would actually help.

I work with people to understand what’s affecting their wellbeing and explore what might help. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, so I take the time to understand what’s going on for you and what you need.

Whether that’s counselling, hypnotherapy in Epsom, yoga in Epsom, breathing practices, meditation or a sound bath journey, I can help.

I have clinics in Epsom, Surrey and Crawley, West Sussex. If you’d like to find out more about how I can support you, please get in touch.
