What Does A Sound Bath Journey Do?

Our health is vital to our wellbeing, and apart from it being dependent on our genes, it is also greatly affected by the amount of stress we are under.  This in turn, can be reflected by the foods we eat, whether we exercise regularly and whether we relax, rest, sleep and socialise all in moderation.

Modern day living seems to create more pressure for us to live under, which can have a huge impact on our stress levels. When living in a tense state our body responds in a certain way, called the “flight or fight” response. Over a longer period of time it is this that has a detrimental effect on our overall health, our body, our mind and our emotions – upsetting our body / mind connection and our body’s natural balance.

Therefore, in a life filled with a constant “hustle and bustle” simmer, finding the time, or even a moment, to be quiet, tranquil or still, are few.  Often, any relaxation is frequently overlooked by “having other things to do”.   However, amongst the business of everyday life, the practice of experiencing a Sound Bath Journey can offer the space to experience that peace, stillness or tranquillity within.

This ancient practice harnesses the power of sound vibrations to promote wellness and relaxation, and research suggests that sound might be able to help with:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Calming mind, body and emotions
  • Overall mental and spiritual wellbeing
  • Deep rest and relaxation
  • A release of tension and emotions you may have been holding onto

A Sound Bath Journey is a great way to relax, decompress, and focus on listening in order to connect to the present moment.

Self-care is really important, and by taking some space from the modern-day pressures of screens, news cycles, work, and family obligations, and essentially putting yourself in a ‘do not disturb’ mode to bathe in sound, can calm the body, emotions and mind.

“Thank you so much for last evening. You created a feeling of complete relaxation within me. The afterglow (and fragrance of the Lodge) remained with me until bedtime, and I slept very soundly. Thank you for all your many skills, and empathy”.

How Does It Work?

According to Wikipedia, sound is defined as oscillations in pressure that propagate through a medium such as air, water or solids. These oscillations create sound waves, which are characterised by their frequency (pitch) and amplitude (loudness). The human ear detects these waves, converting them into electrical signals that the brain interprets as sound.

Sound impacts us on an elemental level. In fact, research shows us that sounds consist of vibrations that affect us on a cellular level, impacting brain, nerve, muscle, and organ function.

For instance, the sound of nails screeching on a chalkboard sets our teeth on edge and raises the hair on the back of our necks; whereas, a loud crash startles us, causing us to jump in fear. However, the sound of the sea and the lapping of the waves can soothe us, and a melodious chime puts us in a good mood. These reactions involve neural, physiological, and biochemical reactions within the body, as our minds and bodies sync to the vibrations of the sound.

Therefore, the overall effect of a Sound Bath Journey aims to channel the power of its sound vibrations towards an individual’s relaxation and wellbeing.

A 2020 review notes that Sound Therapy can significantly alter brain waves, changing agitated wave patterns to exceptionally calm wave forms. As our brain waves slow down, we shift from an active state to a more relaxed state.

In this state, our breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure decrease.

This helps our immune system function more efficiently, reduces our stress hormones (the ones that cause us to go into that “flight or fight” response), and triggers the release of feel-good chemicals in the brain.

A Sound Bath is an ancient method which has been used by different cultures from around the World.

“My sound bath experience has been a new and enlightening adventure. It is so enjoyable to lie still in the calm, welcoming atmosphere of The Lodge, pleasantly enveloped in the varied beautiful sounds created by Pavana playing her collection of unique instruments, together with her varied and inspiring vocal contributions. Each session has taken me on a sensory and emotional journey that has at times felt truly magical. I always leave feeling uplifted and refreshed.”

What Is A Sound Bath Journey Like:

The NHS Humber Recovery and Well-being College say that “At its core, a Sound Bath is a therapeutic experience that involves immersing oneself in the soothing sounds of various instruments”.

Indeed, this is exactly what it is.  You begin by laying on your back, on a soft mat with your body covered with a blanket or throw, and your eyes closed.  A flannel is provided to place over your closed eyes.

As you connect to the natural rhythmic flow of your breath, you will begin to take a journey into a deep relaxation as you are bathed in the harmonic sounds of a Goddess or Singing Bowl, a Chinese Wind Gong, an Irish Bodhran Drum, a Rain Stick, a Sansula and Koshi Bells, along with vocal toning and meditation, chant, mantra, poetry, or a similar verse.

These instruments coupled with vocal toning and other verse, chant or meditation, will produce harmonious frequencies that resonate throughout the body, inducing that state of deep relaxation, which is a simple and profound way to connect with the core of your being, and tune your body at a cellular level through the gentleness of its resonance.

As this happens, stress and blockages are released along the way, which also help wash through you to begin to find an inner peace, effectively touching your mind, body and spirit.

You will be guided and facilitated the whole way through this unique, and enjoyable experience.

All welcome, no yoga or meditation experience required.   Working with sound, may just be the realignment you are looking for.
